AXUM. Armah, 6th-7th century. AE (Bronze, 21 mm, 1.31 g). 'King Armah' (in Ge'ez) Armah seated right on throne, draped and wearing turreted crown, holding a long scepter surmounted by cross. Rev. 'Let there be Joy to the People' (in Ge'ez) around cross flanked by barley stalks; both the cross and the barley stalks are surmounted on a circular base; the cross is gilded in center. MAKS 72a. Munro-Hay Type 153. Corroded and with some edge chipping, otherwise, about very fine.

Armah, allegedly the last of the Axumite kings to have issued his own coins, is known today as the addressee of a legendary letter written by the Prophet Muhammad. In the letter Muhammad invites Armah to convert to Islam. The historicity of the letter is highly debated, but nonetheless the famous historian Al-Tabari mentions that Muhammad prayed an absentee funeral prayer for Armah in the year 630
